In July 2026, I went to Toyakemori Mountain in Ishinomaki. Locals call it “Umakkoyama,” and for people of my generation, it is a small hill that pretty much everyone visited as a child, often on school excursions.

The day I recorded these sounds was very hot, but there is always a breeze around the top of Umakkoyama, making it feel a little cooler and very pleasant.

The view and the wind from up there somehow feel as though they haven’t changed since I first went there as a child. (Although, in reality, quite a lot has changed.)
