Mid-July, 2026.

During Japan's rainy season, after a shishimai (lion dance) rehearsal, I stopped by Mt. Kenjosan. A light drizzle fell—just enough to leave the umbrella behind—while mist rose from the mountains like steam.

Beyond a spring known locally as Yama no Kami no Mizu ("Water of the Mountain Deity"), I walked deeper into the forest, where groundwater quietly emerged from the earth and formed a small stream. Birds sang vividly through the mist, and the whole landscape felt as though the boundary between the ordinary world and something beyond had gently dissolved.

As I stood there, taking in the atmosphere, I noticed a deer antler nearby. A few steps away lay the deer's skull, already beginning to take on the green hues of moss.

It made me feel that this deer, too, would gradually become part of the mountain.

I quietly offered a moment of respect before continuing on my way.
